Membership Plans vs. Dental Insurance: Understanding the Differences

Dental insurance is familiar territory for a lot of families. You get a plan through work or buy one yourself, hand us the card, and then try to make sense of deductibles, percentages, annual maximums, and what the plan actually pays when treatment comes up. An in-house membership works differently because the benefits come directly through our office.

At Dental Salon in Cedar Park, Texas, Dr. Ana Torres offers an in-house membership plan for patients without dental insurance. We are also in-network with many popular insurance providers and help our insured patients with claims and estimates. If you are comparing the two, it helps to look at what you would actually pay over a full year of care.

How Dental Insurance Works at Our Office

Dental insurance usually comes with a monthly premium, whether you pay it yourself or share the cost with an employer. Your specific plan sets the deductible, covered services, percentage it pays, annual maximum, and any waiting periods. Two people can both have dental insurance and still end up with very different out-of-pocket costs.

We are currently in-network with plans including Aetna, Ameritas, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Carington, Cigna, Dental Select, Guardian, Humana, MetLife, Principal, and UnitedHealthcare. Our team files claims and can help you understand what your plan is expected to contribute. If your insurance company is not listed, give us a call because network participation can change.

Once you need treatment beyond cleanings and exams, your deductible, coverage percentage, and annual maximum start affecting what you pay. A crown may be covered at 50%, another plan may pay 60%, and both may still leave you with a deductible or a chunk of the fee. A few procedures close together can also burn through an annual maximum faster than most people expect.

What Our Membership Plan Includes

Our in-house membership is designed for patients without dental insurance who want a simpler way to cover routine care and save on additional treatment. The current annual fee starts at $270 for the first member and $220 for the second family member. A third and fourth family member under age 18 can currently be added for $139 each.

Each membership includes two routine cleanings, two routine exams, all necessary X-rays, and one emergency visit during the year. Members also receive a 20% discount on additional preventive, restorative, and cosmetic services at our office. Plans for patients under 18 include fluoride treatments as well.

Your benefits begin as soon as you enroll. There is no waiting period before you can start using the included visits or member discount. For patients who are self-employed, between insurance plans, retired, or simply do not have dental coverage, that can make the year easier to budget for.

What the Membership Discount Covers

The 20% discount applies when you need treatment beyond the visits already included in the plan. If Dr. Torres finds a cavity, you need a crown, or you decide to move forward with whitening or veneers, that discount comes off the additional service. We provide fillings, crowns, root canal treatment, dentures, implants, whitening, veneers, orthodontic care, and other services right here in our office.

Cosmetic treatment is one area where the membership can look very different from insurance. Many insurance plans do not contribute toward whitening or veneers, while our member discount still applies. If one of those treatments has been sitting on your “maybe someday” list, it is worth including in the math.

If you already know a crown or a few fillings are coming, use those numbers when you compare your options. A year with two cleanings looks very different from a year with several restorative appointments. The more accurately you can estimate what you will use, the easier the comparison gets.

Dental Insurance Comes With Its Own Rules

Insurance can be a valuable benefit, especially when an employer pays part of the premium. Still, every plan has its own deductible, annual maximum, waiting periods, frequency limits, and percentages for different procedures. Those are the numbers that determine what actually comes out of your pocket.

For example, one plan may cover cleanings fully but only part of a crown. Another may contribute more toward major treatment but cap the total amount it pays for the year. That is why “covered by insurance” can mean anything from a small patient balance to a pretty significant one.

Our team can help with estimates and claims, but the insurance company makes the final decision about benefits. If you have treatment planned, we can give you an estimate based on the information available from your carrier. That way, you know what the likely cost looks like before you are sitting in the chair.

What If You Are New to Dental Salon and Do Not Have Insurance?

We also offer a new-patient special for uninsured patients. The current offer is $195 for X-rays, a dental checkup, cleaning, and fluoride treatment for a new patient coming in for routine preventive care. That gives you a straightforward way to get established with us and see what your teeth actually need.

Our annual membership then covers two cleanings and exams, all necessary X-rays, an emergency visit, and the 20% discount on additional services. Families can also enroll multiple members at the reduced rates listed above. If everyone seems to be due for something at the same time, having those costs laid out ahead of time can make things a lot easier.

Because we provide preventive, restorative, cosmetic, pediatric, and orthodontic care, many families can keep most of their dental care in one place. Kids can come in for routine visits, parents can take care of fillings or crowns, and someone can ask about whitening without being sent somewhere else. That can make life a little simpler when you are already juggling everyone’s schedules.

What If You Already Have Dental Insurance?

If you already have dental insurance through work, start with what you pay in premiums, your annual maximum, and how the plan handles the treatment you are likely to need. Employer contributions can make some plans very affordable. In that case, your current coverage may already work well for you.

Our membership is intended for patients without dental insurance, so the membership discount generally is not something you would stack on top of insurance benefits. It gives uninsured patients another way to cover preventive care and save on additional treatment. We can explain the current terms if you are comparing options.

Some families end up with a mix. One spouse may have employer dental insurance while another family member does not, or the kids may be covered under a different plan. We can help sort through who is using which option so you are not staring at three benefit summaries wondering what applies to whom.

We Offer Other Ways to Pay Too

Membership and insurance are only part of the financial side of dental care. We also accept cash, debit and credit cards, FSAs and HSAs, and CareCredit. Patients paying cash currently receive a 5% cash discount, and CareCredit can be used to break larger treatment costs into payments.

That can help when a crown or root canal lands in a month that already has plenty going on. We can go over the available options before treatment starts and show you what the numbers look like. Knowing the cost ahead of time usually makes the decision a lot less stressful.

If cost is making you hesitate about care, talk with us. We can explain the payment options available through our office and walk through the estimate with you. Sometimes the easiest way to deal with a big number is to stop guessing and see exactly what the options are.

Membership Plans and Dental Insurance at Dental Salon in Cedar Park, TX

For an uninsured patient, our membership is pretty straightforward: an annual fee covers your routine preventive visits and X-rays, includes an emergency visit, and takes 20% off additional services. Dental insurance has more moving parts, but employer-sponsored coverage can still be a strong benefit. The better fit depends on what you are paying for coverage and what kind of dental care you expect to use during the year.

If you are comparing your insurance with our membership plan, bring us the numbers. Dr. Ana Torres and our team at Dental Salon in Cedar Park can explain the current membership rates, help you understand how your insurance works at our office, and show you what each option would look like for the care you need. It is a lot easier to decide once the numbers are sitting in front of you.
