Regular Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning
January 26, 2021 10:18 pmVisiting the dentist every six months helps keep your oral health in great shape. Skipping these regular cleanings can allow small problems to become big ones. If it’s been a while since your last cleaning and checkup, we may recommend a deep cleaning. In this blog post, we discuss the difference between a routine cleaning and a deep cleaning.
Regular Cleanings
When you visit us for your biannual appointment, you’ll get a regular cleaning, which is a preventive treatment. Using special tools, we’ll clean plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, between your teeth, and along your gumline. Tartar, which is hardened plaque, can only be removed by a professional with the right tools. We’ll also floss and polish your teeth. Fluoride treatments are beneficial, too. After a regular cleaning, Dr. Torres will conduct an exam and discuss any issues.
Deep Cleanings
Deep cleanings are necessary to treat gum disease. Gum disease has two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. With gingivitis, you can experience gum swelling, tenderness, redness, and bleeding. This is because your gums are inflamed and irritated. This stage of the disease is usually reversed by improving your oral hygiene routine. If you don’t treat the issue, gum disease will progress to periodontitis. Your gums will pull away from your teeth, forming pockets where bacteria build up. Cavities, toothaches, infections, and tooth loss can follow.
Deep cleanings consist of scaling and root planing. During this non-invasive procedure, we’ll remove plaque and tartar from below your gumline and smooth out the roots of your teeth so they can reattach to your gums. Because the cleaning is more complex, the appointment will last a bit longer.
