Can Root Canal Infections Spread?

If you’ve been told that you need a root canal, we understand that it may sound intimidating. However, leaving a root canal infection untreated can have serious consequences for your health and well-being. During your root canal, your dental team will ensure that you feel comfortable throughout the entire treatment!

What Happens if Root Canal Infections Are Left Untreated?

Dental trauma and gum disease are the leading causes of root canal infections. Ignoring dental issues of this magnitude can cause many problems for your oral and overall health. If a tooth’s roots are infected, the infection can spread to surrounding tissues, bones, and even enter the bloodstream. Leaving a root canal infection could lead to osteomyelitis, cellulitis, sepsis, and many other serious health problems. The sooner you seek treatment for a root canal infection, the better.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy removes decayed and damaged pulp from inside the tooth to prevent the tooth from dying. First, Dr. Torres will completely numb the area around your infected tooth. Then, she will make a small hole in the top of the crown. Through the crown, she will clean out the infection and remove all of the damaged pulp. Once the inside of the tooth’s canals are clean, she fills in the canals with a material called gutta-percha to prevent future infections. More likely than not, our team will recommend placing a crown over the tooth after your root canal procedure. This helps support your weak tooth and prevents further harm to the tooth.
